Corot painted like so many of us, stacking transparent glazes on top of one another from white to medium to dark. But I read that when it came to trees against the sky, Corot had to reverse the process. You paint the dark silhouette of the tree - trunks and leaves- against the previously painted sky, and after the silhouette, you paint in leaves. The last step is painting in the light filtering through the leaves with opaque paint. This is what I have done here with an old tree that I observed for years out of my rear window.
